The new building at the Good Shepherd Cathedral compound serves as an extension to the existing residential quarters within Singapore’s Civic District. Sited within a National Monument, the design responds sensitively to the surrounding urban fabric and conserved architecture. Contemporary materials are thoughtfully employed to complement the historical context, while architectural elements such as recessed verandahs, double-skin façades, and semi-indoor corridors reference traditional building typologies. The chapel, as the heart of the new extension, is centrally placed both spatially and volumetrically, with all other functions arranged symmetrically around it. Perforated façade panels subtly break down the building’s overall scale, ensuring a harmonious relationship with the existing conserved structures on site.
